Changing Phone Line Providers but keeping your existing Enterprise PBX

The legacy phone network, the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), is slowly being phased out. The old way of placing calls, using traditional Analogue and PRI lines in your business is gradually being replaced with new-age internet technology.

Voice over IP (known as VoIP) offers many advantages over traditional PSTN lines. Among these is better flexibility, superior audio quality, lower operational and variable calling costs, and the ability to scale without adding more equipment. Best of all, it doesn’t matter what phone system a business has, there is a high possibility that their existing PBX can still work with VoIP lines.

How VoIP lines work

VoIP lines do not use the physical phone network, but instead leverage the internet network which VoIP providers overlay voice onto. By using an internet line, companies immediately benefit from reduced infrastructure. Registered VoIP providers run telephone services over any internet connection and as with traditional operators, can move phone numbers between networks, and also issue new virtual lines as required.

Perhaps most importantly, VoIP providers generally offer more flexible contracts that are shorter than those of traditional carriers, and tend to charge a bit differently which results in reduced call costs.

The number porting question answered

For many organizations, the prospect of moving to VoIP lines can be intimidating and worrying, mostly due to the concerns over the complexity involved and the fear of losing the numbers their customers know in the process.

However, experienced companies such as 101VOICE have handled thousands of porting projects and have mastered the process to ensure a smooth transition with minimal operational impact to the business.

Old PBX with new Elastic SIP trunking? Yes.

Some organizations think that moving to next-generation VoIP lines means getting rid of their existing PBX equipment, which is not the case. While there are many benefits to migration to new IP PBX technology, legacy PBX systems can be adapted to integrate with VoIP networks.

When combining VoIP lines with new IP PBX technology, organizations can take advantage of Unified Communications (UC) to enable remote working and collaboration, amongst other features and applications.

Switch providers (almost) at will

With VoIP comes freedom and flexibility. It is not unrealistic for VoIP providers and traditional providers to co-exist on the same system, or for a full migration to VoIP lines be undertaken and the cost savings cover the existing fixed costs where existing contract cancellation or penalties are involved.

So, if you don???t like what your current provider is doing, you can do something about it. For many organizations, that is where the true value of VoIP lines is found.
